Ok so maybe it’s not the most impressive thing you’ve ever seen, but it could provide a 5 minute distraction at work. Open up your stapler so you are looking at the base.

stapler1

Turn your stapler over and press on the spring like button on the bottom. That should pop out the smiley face plate (did you ever notice that it looks like a smiley face?)

stapler2

Turn the face 180 degrees.

stapler3

Try it out. See how the staples bend outward instead of inward?

If you’re like me, you’ll think wow this is neat..kind of. Well it actually serves a purpose. This way of stapling is called pinning.

From a wikipedia article,

Pinning is used to temporarily bind documents or other items, often cloth or clothing, for sewing. In order to pin using a stapler, the anvil must be shifted so that the bends outwards instead of inwards. This method varies between staplers, as some anvils need to be simply pushed forward to allow pinning, while others must be rotated. Some staplers implement pinning by bending one leg of the staple inwards, while bending the other outwards. Some modern staplers, though, do not include support for pinning.

So I guess it has a purpose after all.

P.S. Note the last statement of the Wikipedia article. Some staplers don’t support pinning. While I have a classic Swingline Stapler, my coworker wasn’t so lucky.

Post-it is great, it is often turned into art by creative individuals, as well as pranks by the creative amusingly twisted individuals.

Post-it Prank - Messy Version Post-it Prank - Classy Version Post-it Mural Post-it all over Jaguar Type-2

Post-it pranks are always performed by sticking post-its onto an object. If you want a small prank, you can cover a comparatively small object like a printer, someone’s mug or even a chair but of course with such a small object, your prank would not be very effective. Covering someone’s office would be a much better prank. You can do it in a sloppy way (pic 1) or a classy way (pic 2). You can also cover, not just a little piece, but an entire wall and create a mural (pic 3), but when it comes to the extreme, you would go and cover your boss’s Jaguar Type 2, that way he cannot just leave the mess in the office. He would have to deal with any resentment you may or may not have - undo the post-it in the garage or show it to the public.

We all know how quickly we run out of space when writing on a normal whiteboard. One of our friends on Twitter suggested the idea to cover a spare wall with whiteboard paper. I love this idea! Looking into it more, I discovered an office that covered one BIG spare wall.

My last office was constantly fighting for whiteboard space. Probably not much competition at that office. Where else could you use whiteboard paper? Try your living room or home office.

Oh and did I mention it’s made with recycled material?

P.S. Check out this combo. A wall fountain that doubles as a whiteboard. Could be an interesting addition to your conference room?

I never really like paper shredders. The sound they make used to scare me when I was a kid. Although just recently, I found some very cool paper shredders online, two of which are rather unforgettable for their creative design.

Hamster in a paper shredder.

Paper Shredder Hamster Residence by Thomas Ballhatchet
This is exactly what it is except that it is less bloody that what you might be thinking. From designer Tom Ballhatchet, we have this hamster residence that has a paper shredder at the lid. The way it works is that you put a piece of paper on in between the blades, in order for the paper to be shredded, the hamster would have to start running on the wheel. Not only does this paper shredder reused used paper, I bet it is a great entertainment.

Shred your time away.

Chrono Shredder by Susanna Hertrich
Have you even thought about shredding your time away? Designer Susanna Hertrich came up with a Chrono Shredder that does not have a power switch, which means that the hacked paper shredder will start shredding away the part of the paper roll that has the current date on it every 24 hours and the shredded paper, as you can see in the picture, accumulates and become a piece of art work.

Nothing is more logical than to use a lock to protect your Usb Key drive. It’s great to stop your coworkers from stealing your usb drive in most situations. The lock comes in the three standard Tech color, black, silver and white.
