This amazing piece of office supplies art is made by Steven Nicholson is a 2yr student at Plymouth university in the United Kingdom studying Graphic communications with typography. And apparently he is a genius with a hole punch? Check out this self portrait using 10 different sized hole punches on 1 piece of paper that he just sent over. Can you imagine the patience?

In your real physical work space, documents are structured, marked, organized, and construed to contain subtle informative cues that help us tremendously in processing our daily work load. Such expressive cues are lost when translated into the virtual world. If your computer desktop is anything like mine, it is most likely littered with non-descript uniform icons with names that doesn’t really reflect the essence of the documents. If your computer desktop is anything like mine, I would not poke those file with a ten-foot pole, in fear of loosing myself in miles of data I can not extrapolate myself from. Why can’t my computer desktop resemble the ease and usability of my desktop at work? Well, actually, Anand Agarawala, recently created BumpTop, which promises to bring the interactivity, the quirkiness, and the logic that exist on your desktop at work to life on its virtual counter. Some of the images below capture my favorite features of this computer desktop.

crumpled paper

Crumpling documents into crumpled paper state before deletion might be ultra useful as a way of organizing file.

Desktop

File on the desktop can be made into neat piles that then can be manipulated in various ways to be examined. This particular command allows one to browse pile by fanning out the content.

bumptop

One of my favorite feature of this application allows one to place weight and emphasis on a particular file by enlarging the file, that then literally takes on physical weight and can not be moved by smaller lighter objects.

What other suggestions do you have to improve your computer desktop interface and experience?

Have you ever wondered what office space of creative people looks like? Is there something in particular that is drastically different in the work space of people of uber creative nature that lend itself to the bubbling of stream of inventiveness? Does the use of particular office furniture inspire the brain to insightful thinking? This week, I came across some images, courtesy of pingmag, that showed the office environment of some creative individuals ranging from designer, to artists, to editors, to film makers. For more sources for blogs dedicated to creativity, click here.

Companion Collectibles
Having enjoyable, fun, playful, and colorful figurines might help someone reach their creative voice, as they have imaginary play dialogues with their favorite figurines. This is the office of an illustrator in U.K.

Clean Desk
This, clean, minimal desk, without the clutter and reminders of nostalgic objects, is able to lead to clean, clear, and fresh thinking. Sometimes the best way to creativity, is to start from nothing. This office desk belongs to art director in Sheffield, UK.

Destruction is the Source of Creation
This is the desk of an editor in Tokyo Japan. It is often true we find source of inspirations in random patterns in mess. Without messing things up, how can we then reconstruct everything back together in new ways?

Creative Office Tools of the Trade
What can I say, the essential tools of all creative individuals are x-acto knife, cutting mat, drawing paper, and drawing crayons. With these essentials, you are guaranteed to find the creative voice within. This is the desk of an artist in U.K.

Long Desk for Creativity
Creative people like to make a mess, and spread as they are making a mess as well. A large and long desk really might help someone spread their creative imagination. This is the desk of an art director in Japan.

death by working

Last week, a piece of news really caught my ears. Seeing something that had been floating around in the workplace in the form of workplace urban legends published bold and loud courtesy of Associated Press made it home in my mind. The story concerns the death of a man at work, by working. Apparently, this phenomenon of death by working is quite common in Japan, that the phenomenon actually have its own pop culture terminology. This is a piece of bizarro news that I hope everyone takes to heart, literally.

TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese labor bureau has ruled that one of Toyota’s top car engineers died from working too many hours, the latest in a string of such findings in a nation where extraordinarily long hours for some employees has long been the norm.

The man who died was age 45 and had been under severe pressure as the lead engineer in developing a hybrid version of Toyota’s blockbuster Camry line, said Mikio Mizuno, the lawyer representing his wife. The man’s identity is being withheld at the request of his family, who continue to live in Toyota City where the company is based.

In the two months up to his death, the man averaged more than 80 hours of overtime per month, according to Mizuno.

He regularly worked nights and weekends, was frequently sent abroad and was grappling with shipping a model for the pivotal North American International Auto Show in Detroit when he died of ischemic heart disease in January 2006. The man’s daughter found his body at their home the day before he was to leave for the United States.

There is an effort in Japan to cut down on deaths from overwork, known as “karoshi.” Such deaths have steadily increased since the Health Ministry first recognized the phenomenon in 1987.

So I am sitting here, typing away on a very typical, albeit quite uninspiring PC computer keypad, musing on just how much time I really do spend clobbering away on this input device. The answer is quite a lot. I began to wonder, would typing on a more intriguing device allow my creativity level to increase? This set me on a path to find some of the more intriguing keyboards invented in recent years, that I know will boost my productivity level as well as creativity level. The following keyboards are all going on my Christmas list!
