As you may or may not know, we sell office chairs at Shoplet.com. So of course I had to dedicate 15 minutes of my day, looking through our chairs for faces.

Okay so I cheated. But I would most likely lose my job if I spent an hour looking for chairs with faces already on them! I turned around this morning to see my co-workers chair and I definitely thought LOL chair. Does anyone have any photos to share? If you need a new LOL chair, search our site or post a link of your chair  below! Oh and you have to title these for me. I’m afraid I’m not super in with the I can Haz Cheeseburger lingo.

What do you envision in an office space in 10 years? It is one of those questions that give you goosebumps, isn’t it?
Here are four nifty items that may give you some insight.

iPod Nano Tie
iPod Nano Tie Apple has made a few attempts in intergrating iPods with fashion. Their strategy is rather marketing-incline than subtlety; they want people to wear an iPod as an accessory. While the delicatly designed iPod looks as good as it is sitting on a desk as a talisman of industrial design, it may not necessarily look good with a Michael Kors watch or a Ben Sherman shirt. A British company came up with a tie that hides your iPod Nano. Flip over the tie, you will see 2 loops that help to hide the wire hanging off your iPod Nano and an extra flap of fabric that serves as a pocket to your iPod. The tie came in navy, red and pink and it is made of 100% silk. Steve Jobs may be an expert in computer products, but when it comes to fashion advice, you go to someone like Carson Kressley.
Your Personal Massues in Your Office
Spa Head Massager in your office Spa Head Massager in your office Borg Queen
One night, you are at your office; over time; on a deadline; don’t you wish there was someone who can give you a massage? One of the 2008 new invention is this Head Spa Massager. The moment you put on this device, it simulates thousands of little fingers massaging your scalp. Despite it’s ‘futuristic’ and interesting design, it is sold at an affordable price. The device uses a rechagrable battery and is fairly easy to carry with you. If you feel such an intense need that you need a personal masseuse in your office, this is probably a good option besides the fact that you are going to look lke the Borg Queen…
Portable Office Work Station
Portable Office Workstation - Contracted Portable Office Workstation - Extended Portable Office Workstation
I am a transformer fan, which explains why I find this Portable Office fascinating. This giant box looks like nothing but a decoration when it is condensed, it is in fact not one but two office spaces when extended. It includes 2 desks, outlets and a tone of storage space. It also has a handle and weels underneath it for mobility. Imagine the flexibility this invention can offer an office space. Would not it be cool if we use these things instead of cubicles?
Robo Receptionist.
The final object that will most likely be implemented in an office space in countable years is possibly an android - a robot that look just like us human. Believe it or not, without make a big deal out of it, androids are being developed all over the world. One of the famous projects belongs to Kokoro, a Japanese company that specializes in anamotronics and robotics. Kokoro has came up with a few versions of female androids. They are all so advance at a point where they understands basic commands and interact with human beings. It has been announced and demonstrated that the female androids developed by Kokoro are capable of fulfilling receptionists positions. Androids are definitely the most fascinating invention and ought to be paid more attention to.■ Android Receptionist

Let’s talk versatile. Most of the things you get for your office are probably of no use to your home and here are some cool, versatile gadgets that will better your office AND your home.

USB Cup Warmer USB Drink Holder. When your coffee gets cold because you are working too hard, or when there is not a fridge in your office when you brought in a can of energy drink to boost your performance, don’t you think you deserve a better treatment for the kind of work ethic you have? Check this USB drink holder out. It comes in different shapes and designs to appeal your eyes. Plug it into an USB port and you can keep your drinks however you want it. A hot energy drink or a cold coffee without ice or the other way around, it’s all your choice.

Portable Natural Light. Our power is too little to control mother-nature, but if sunlight is a very important element for you to give your 100% at work, there is a way to cheat on the rainy days or in your windowless office. This blinds designed by Ms. Makoto Hirahara looks just like another window with a blinds on, but you will fall in love with it if you love a window in your space but cannot afford to dig a hole in a wall. Take a closer look; you will realize that the window is in fact a light fixture behind the blinds. The two pieces work together to mimic a naturally lit-through window. Maybe you do not get a view outside the window, but you will definitely get the light or the illusion you need. Natural Light with Blind Light Fixture

The Soft Collection by Molo Design The 2008 Fold-up Seating. From Molo Design, we have this fold-up seating called “Softseating”. Softseating is the combination of physics and the art of paper; it uses a honeycomb structure and is designed to fan out to create seating in different shapes to fit your needs. It comes in different colors and you have an option to purchase a textile version which is manufactured using class A fireproof material. The design and the flexibility of Softseating is definitely a good thing to both your office and your home.

Nappak. If you would like to work late and sleep over in your office, go right ahead (great perseverance, by the way), but don’t do it on the roller chair, do it with Nappak. Nappak is a portable, space efficient air bed. It almost looks like a golf club bag when Nappak is rolled up. It is very portable and will give you just what you need when you need a good sleep. Bring it to your office or leave it at home as the center piece for you “guest bedroom”.■ Nappak when closed

I think that books are always one of the easiest way to embellish your living/work environment. While there are simple and effective bookcases options such as barrister bookshelves to aggregate and display your own personal collection of books, I would favor more eccentric bookcases. Here is a list of my favorite ones.

Platzhalter Bookshelf Splits To Store Extra Books

Platzhalter-bookshelf

The Platzhalter bookshelf unique designer can  help you accommodate your always expanding collection by splitting into a “V” shape.

When the bookshelf does finally reach critical mass, the result is actually quite interesting. Unfortunately, the design is only a concept at this point—but it has a lot of potential.

Infinity Bookcase Stores Finite Amount of Books, Is Infinitely Cool Anyway

Created by Dutch artist Job Koelewijn, The infinity bookshelves symbolizes the power of learning, or the infinitenature of knowledge through its lemniscate  shape. While it may not fit in your average office, it would be an great piece to have in the publishing firm.

 Expandable Bookshelf

The REK bookshelves features an ingenious design that is both visually interesting and practical for those who accumulate a lot of books.

The REK expands and collapses like an accordion to eliminate negative space on the shelf. As you book collection grows, the shelves can be pulled apart in a configuration of your choosing.

Invisible Bookshelf

Saving in space and a minimum of emcombrement on your wall for this very astute rack which will enable you to arrange your books without seeing the structure of the rack!

The “invisible bookshelf” is completely obscured by the books you put on it, creating the illusion of floating piles of books mysteriously affixed to your walls.
Topple Bookshelf

topple-bookshelf

Out of all the furniture we’d safely add the feature of “rocking” to, a bookshelf would be down near the bottom of the list next to ovens, refrigerators and ironing boards.

Julian Appelius has the opposite idea, adding a five-degree tilt to the bottom of this Topple bookshelf, which supposedly still keeps books upright as long as you have enough of them to fill a row. Still, the looming threat of being crushed by old copies of National Geographics and Playboys puts us on edge.

Would you like to work here?

Every day when I walk down the street and look up to the buildings into people’s window, I am often amazed by how nicely decorated their apartments are. And there are times when you are appreciating the superb interior design, as you walk past the residential building and come to an office building, your eyes are offended all of a sudden; by the creepy looking office space. What is ruined is the peace of mind and the warm and cozy feeling instilled in your head by the beautifully decorated apartment you saw a second ago. You are stuck with images of dull white light in your head on the rest of your way home. Then there is the question: If you spend almost as much time at your office as you do at home, why don’t you make your office feels like your home?

Google understands the relationship between interior design and productivity and it takes a very unconventional approach to design their offices.

Artificial Grass in Google Office - America Library Area with Plants in Google Office - America 'Tent' Conference Rooms in Google Office - America

Minimalism with high quality has always been Google’s style, and such idea is shown throughout their offices. Google’s interior design approach does not overwhelm one’s eyes with way too many bold colors. It also uses fun furniture - like massage chairs and pool tables to make the workplace more fun and more like home for its employees.

There are three things that deem the most importance to create a homier office.

Lighting. Good lighting will help to increase productivity. If an office is too dark, it might put your employees to sleep especially when there are computers or other devices that strain human eyes around. In contract, too much light will cause glare on screens and cause discomfort. How much light an office needs depends on the kind of work the office does and also the age of its employees. To make your office feel more like home – not your bedroom, the lighting used in a café or a restaurant would be a good attempt.

Space Usage. It is okay to have a lot of things in your cubicle or in your office, you just need to organize it. Use colorful filing supplies can help to keep your mind entertained. Unless you are going for a retro or a cyber home, use the homier wooden bookcases instead of plastic or steel ones. Plan your space and target to reduce unnecessary motion.

Plants. Plants are great – both artificial plants and real ones. Not only do plants help to relax your eye muscles, real plants also consume excessive carbon dioxide to keep your concentration at a high level. According to a recent study, employees react quicker and are more focus when plants are added to an office. If someone has an allergy, use artificial plants instead. Artificial plants are low-maintenance and have a longer life span. It is also easier to craft your interior design with artificial plants because they will not change in shape and size.

Also, research on how colors can affect the human mind before deciding your theme colors. For example, orange, yellow and red are colors that can potentially increase our appetite, if you cannot endure the potential long-lasting hunger, then maybe you should not use too much of those colors to decorate your office. ■
