Friday Fun: Try these Simple Ideas for a Greener New Year
It’s a new year and if you’re like us, one of your on-going resolutions for 2017 is to maintain a green lifestyle– or if you haven’t started yet, to become a little greener! Incorporating a green lifestyle is no easy feat, but every little bit can help make a difference in our environment. This week, we round up some of the best and simplest things we can try this month- and year, to decrease our carbon footprint! Do you accept our challenge? Try these simple ideas for a greener New Year– It’s possible!
1. Skip eating meat once a week.
Most of us are accustomed to eating meats with every meal, but did you know that the energy used to raise and prepare livestock creates a large amount of greenhouse gases? Cutting back on meat one night of the week can make a big difference.
2. Shop thrifty.
Seasons go and styles change. Instead of splurging on a new coat or handbag every season, why not try second-hand clothing? Exploring lower-cost alternative clothing options can help keep you wallet full, can support a good cause, AND eliminates product waste– Score!
3. Switch to safer cooking-ware.
Did you know that non-stick pans are actually harmful to the environment? “Non-stick” pans have been coated with numerous chemicals, and using these pans overtime can be detrimental to health. The best eco-pans are cast iron or stainless steel!
4. Carpool if possible.
Is driving part of your morning commute? If so, try carpooling to fill up some seats, eliminate the number of cars on the road (think: less traffic jams), and produce less carbon wastes in the air!
5. Switch to green cleaners.
Most of the cleaners we used daily actually contains chemicals foul to the environment. To decrease our uses of these products, look for natural cleaners or even try DIY-ing some! (We hear baking soda works wonders!)
6. Skip the bottled water.
Purchasing bottled water once in a while is understandable, but opting for a reusable water bottle is better for the environment in the long term– especially if you live in an area with clean drinking tap water! Water filters can also easily turn your tap into delicious drinkable water.
7. Stay informed about “Going Green.”
Congrats, you’ve made it through this entire post, which means you already have one thing checked off!
