Zine Olympics with Office Supplies!
I saw these prize medals from the Spring 2012 Zine Olympics on Fotoflow’s Flickr – they are so cool! I would love to win a gold mini-stapler, silver scissors, or a bronze staple remover. Fotoflow directed me to their website where they had all the games listed that they played! Seriously, if you are in charge of the next office party, your work is done. These games look so fun!
Speed Stapling is a singles event in which competitors must staple within three sheets of targets in a short amount of time. This is a timed event, best time wins, with seconds added to competitors’ times for inaccurate stapling.
Precision folding is a singles event in which competitors must fold a series of folds: 5 standard sized sheets horizontally in half, 4 smaller sheets horizontally in half, 3 sheets folded in tri-fold, 2 sheets vertically in half, one 1-page zine fold challenge! This is a timed event, best time wins, points taken off for sub-standard folds.
Relay Speed Stapling
Relay Speed Stapling is a 4-person event in which team mates must recreate specific designs in a small space on a sheet of paper. The first team mate staples in each of the spaces to start each design, and passes it to the second team mate, who continues the designs. The second team mate then passes the sheet to the third team mate, who also continues the designs. The third team mate passes the sheet to the fourth team mate who finishes the designs. This is a timed event with seconds added to teams’ times for inaccurate stapling.
Cutting is a singles event in which competitors are presented with 3 shapes cut out of color construction paper of increasing complexity three different shapes and must cut each shape from color construction paper as closely to the original as possible. The competitors can not touch the shapes they are presented. Points are awarded for accuracy by a three-panel jury. Any celebratory dances or jumping must be done once the scissors have been placed on the table.
Stapling with a normal stapler
Stapling with a normal stapler is a singles event in which competitors must staple a letter-digest zine with a normal stapler, leaving as little wear to the zine as possible. This is a timed event, with seconds added to competitors’ times for inaccurate stapling and bent covers.
Collating is a doubles event. Each team is presented with a stack of unfolded pages to a zine (with numbered pages) that have been mixed up. They must rearrange the pages in proper order, fold the zine, and staple it. First team wins, with disqualification if pages are out of order. Penalties given for a sloppy job.
Create a cover
Create a cover is a separate event that takes place continuously throughout the night. Individuals can form teams of any size, and create a cover for a zine. The teams are given a supply of cover-making materials (clip art, glue sticks, markers, magazines) to create a cover based on a title created by drawing random words out of two containers. This is a “people’s choice” competition in which the audience will decide by volume of cheers whose cover is the winner.
