Coconut Oil for Green Cleaning! by Jessica Hodges
Have you caught on to the coconut oil craze yet? If you haven’t, you’re missing out. From hydrating your skin and hair to sweetening up your cooking routine, consider coconut oil your healthy, happy, new best friend.
So why would anyone ever settle for toxic chemicals cleaners, which are known to aggravate lungs and irritate skin, when there’s coconut oil? Probably because most folks don’t know where to start cleaning with coconut oil. Well, that’s OK! Because we’ve compiled a handy list of coconut oil cleaning solutions for you to reference the next time your cleaning kick revs itself up again!
Use Coconut Oil As A…
Wood Furniture Polish: Shine up your wood furniture with a dash of lemon juice + 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
Bathtub + Shower Cleaner: Avoid using bleach as a bathroom cleaner, which can irritate your respiratory system with intense, burning pain. Instead, dust some baking soda over your tub, then scrub away with a washcloth dipped in coconut oil.
Stain Lifter: Coconut oil is an excellent stain lifter. Mix one part coconut oil to eight parts of dry cleaning solvent to create a dry spotter solution. With a medicine dropper, plop a small amount of your coconut oil cleaning solution on the stain. Blot up the stain & solution residue with an absorbent pad. Rinse + repeat until the stain disappears.
Rust Remover: Smear coconut oil over your rusty appliances & let sit for fifteen minutes. Wipe away for glistening results.
Sticky Label Remover: Goo-Gone, whaat? Just rub 1 part coconut oil + 1 part baking soda over resistant sticky labels. After letting it sit for a few fair minutes, feel free to peel the label off. Clean & easy!
Stainless Steel Refresher: Here’s a simple way to get rid of pesky water spots + finger prints! Just add a dab of coconut oil to a soft cloth & wipe down your stainless steel appliances. Be sure to wipe the same way as the grain of the stainless steel to give it a pristine, finished look.
Season a Cast Iron Pan: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, clean your pan with warm water only (Avoid using soap, unless you don’t mind your food tasting soapy). Rub coconut oil all over your pan, both inside & out. Though you won’t be cooking with the outside of your pan, the oil protects it from potentially rusting. Set pan upside down on your oven rack & heat it up for 30-60 minutes. After heating it up, let your pan cool on a drying rack for 30 minutes.
Scuff Mark Remover: Banish scuff marks on your floors! Rub away the damage with either a sponge or washcloth dipped in coconut oil. To ensure that nobody slips, wipe away thoroughly!
Leather Enhancer: Massage a thin layer of coconut oil into your leather furniture to prevent cracking, wear and tear over time. After leaving this on for a few minutes, buff the residue away with a clean rag.
Wooden Cutting Board Sanitizer: Coat your cutting board with coconut oil, let it sit overnight, then wipe it off the next morning. Depending on how desperate your cutting board is for a good cleaning, you might need to repeat this process.
