5 Ways to Make Your Desk More Organized
Office work shouldn’t feel too much like a chore. Alright, maybe it is. Sitting long hours at a desk, sinking into your off-brand swivel chair while the harsh light of the computer screen slowly robs you of your eyesight. Well, maybe it isn’t that bad either (but this is a friendly reminder that we should all get up from our desks every once in awhile).
We should feel at least a little bit of comfort when sitting down at our desk or cubicle, right? After all, it’s pretty much like a second home. Here are some tips on how you can make your desk more organized and suck a lot less!
Go get a cork board and hang it on your wall. All that desk space devoted to your random mess can now go there! Cork boards can hold photos of the family, inspirational quotes, notes, anything. With a little tape or string you can even make a cork board calendar. If you want people to leave you alone, create elaborate conspiracy theory maps complete with newspaper cuttings and string. It’s sure to freak out even the most intrusive of coworkers.
We’re on a theme here, but we can’t emphasize it enough. Utilize that wall space and create a place for all of those random thoughts and ideas. Something erasable and still versatile can really help with that. A little chaos is good for the brain, but it needs to have its own place. Whiteboards can be as messy or neat as you want, and changing it up is as easy as a simple erase. So, get rid of those torn pieces of notebook paper and write that phone number on the board. With some whiteboard tape, you can even design your own calendar to organize your schedule – it’ll be easy to see, look great and probably be a lot easier to deal with than your Outlook calendar.
Filing Cabinets & Hanging Organizers
What’s the secret to an organized desk? Making sure to only put things on it that you use most often. Get rid of all those old papers, notebooks you never open, that manual you need but really don’t use or anything else that isn’t of immediate service to your current projects. Free up space in your filing cabinet for those things that you only refer to once in awhile. You know, stuff that you’re supposed to file. Wall space is great for your notes, ideas, recent paperwork, and things you refer to daily or weekly. Utilize more of that wall real estate and make your space colorful with hanging organizers for things that you use regularly. You can save a ton of desk space and make your office more colorful and organized as well.
A Coat Hook
A coat hook is a little hack that’ll save you a bunch of space. Keep those coats, purses and bags off the back of the chairs. It’ll be more comfortable, save you space and look classy too.
All Those Other Things
Pens, pencils, erasers, push pins, tape, Post-It® Notes, chargers, batteries, staples, snacks or candy. If they aren’t organized properly, these little things can add up and make your space feel like a mess. But don’t worry, there are easy, cheap fixes that look great too. Try putting those small things into mason jars, old promo mugs or spray-painted food baskets. If you are looking for other options, there are plenty of nifty boxes and organizers that you can find online as well. Remember: Use your desk top for all of the things that you use the most, and organize the rest accordingly. It’s amazing how far something small and simple can go in making your space feel good again.
